This softshell jacket is perfect for winter rides. It has a membrane that protects from the wind while remaining breathable, plus a soft fleece lining to keep you warm.
Our passionate road cycling product team created this winter jacket so you can stay warm when cycling in cold and windy weather.
The purpose of a cycling jacket
The third layer is the layer that protects you from the elements, such as the cold and wind, while the layers underneath provide warmth and breathability. Wearing a proper cycling jacket helps you maintain your performance and comfort levels regardless of the weather. The RC500 cycling jacket has a built-in removable neck gaiter that keeps you nice and warm. The zipped vents under the arms can be adjusted to let perspiration escape.
Breathability
To determine a fabric’s breathability we measure its evaporative resistance or RET (based on standard ISO11092).
The lower its resistance, the more the fabric will let water vapor produced by the body escape, and therefore the more breathable it is.
โข RET < 6: Extremely breathable, good for intense workouts โข RET 6 to 12: Very breathable, good for moderate workouts โข RET 12 to 20: Moderately breathable, uncomfortable during heavy exertion โข RET > 20: Hardly breathable, unsuitable for exercise.
Care tips
Machine wash at 86ยฐF. Synthetics cycle. Turn the article inside out. Use a minimal amount of laundry detergent. Do not use fabric softener. Line-dry in a warm, ventilated area. Do not tumble dry. Do not dry clean. Do not bleach. Do not place on a heater to dry.
What is a “softshell”?
A “softshell” is a garment that is windproof and typically stretchy to allow very good freedom of movement. Softshells are water-repellent (protect against light rain/drizzle and spray/splashes on the road), but are not waterproof like “hardshell” jackets.
On the other hand, they have a breathable membrane (allows water vapor generated by the body during exercise to escape) and are therefore suited to sporting activities.
Warmth
A product’s ability to protect from the cold. It depends on the material’s thermal resistance and how much air can pass through it. The higher its thermal resistance, the better the product retains the heat produced by the body while cycling. The RC500 jacket’s main material is almost airtight (lets no air through) and has a thermal resistance (Rฮป) of 0.019 mยฒ K/W.
